Gallbladder Surgery
Gallbladder surgery is commonly performed when the gallbladder becomes inflamed, infected, or develops gallstones. Gallstones are solid particles that form from the components of bile, such as cholesterol and bilirubin. These stones can block the bile ducts, causing pain, inflammation, and potentially leading to more serious complications if left untreated.
There are two main types of gallbladder surgery:
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: This is the most common and minimally invasive approach to gallbladder removal. Several small incisions are made in the abdomen, through which specialized instruments and a tiny camera (laparoscope) are inserted. The surgeon watches a video feed of the inside of the abdomen and uses the instruments to carefully remove the gallbladder. Recovery time is usually shorter compared to open surgery, and there is less scarring.
Open Cholecystectomy: In certain cases where laparoscopic surgery is not feasible due to complications or other factors, an open cholecystectomy may be performed. This involves making a larger incision in the abdomen to directly access and remove the gallbladder. Recovery time is longer, and there is more postoperative pain and scarring compared to laparoscopic surgery.
