Appendix Surgery
The appendix is a small, finger-shaped pouch that extends from the large intestine on the lower right side of the abdomen.
Appendectomy is commonly performed in cases of appendicitis, which is the inflammation of the appendix. Appendicitis can be a serious medical condition that requires prompt treatment. If the inflamed appendix is not removed, it can lead to complications such as the rupture of the appendix, which can result in a serious infection called peritonitis.
The surgery can be performed using different techniques:
Open Appendectomy: In this traditional approach, a single larger incision is made in the lower right abdomen to access and remove the appendix. This method allows the surgeon to directly visualize the area and assess any complications.
Laparoscopic Appendectomy: This minimally invasive technique involves making several small incisions in the abdomen. A laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera, is inserted through one of the incisions to guide the surgeon. Surgical instruments are inserted through the other incisions to remove the appendix. Laparoscopic surgery generally results in smaller scars, less pain, and a quicker recovery time compared to open surgery.
