Liver Surgery
Liver Surgery
Liver surgery can be an essential aspect of gastroenterology, especially in cases where liver diseases or conditions are not responding to conservative treatments or require surgical intervention.
Here are some common conditions that might require liver surgery within the realm of gastroenterology:
Liver Tumors: Liver tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Surgery is often used to remove tumors that are localized and haven’t spread to other parts of the body. Different types of liver tumors include hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), metastatic liver tumors (cancers that have spread from other organs), and benign liver tumors like hemangiomas and adenomas.
Liver Resection: This procedure involves removing a part of the liver that is affected by disease or tumors. The remaining healthy liver tissue can regenerate and compensate for the lost tissue. Liver resection is commonly used for treating liver cancer and some non-cancerous conditions.
Liver Transplantation: In cases of severe liver diseases such as end-stage liver failure or advanced liver cancers, a liver transplant might be necessary. During a liver transplant, the entire liver is replaced with a healthy liver from a deceased or living donor.
Biliary Surgery: Biliary surgery addresses problems related to the bile ducts, which carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder and intestines. Conditions such as bile duct strictures, gallstones, and biliary tumors might require surgical intervention.
Cyst Removal: Liver cysts, which are fluid-filled sacs, can sometimes become large and cause discomfort or other complications. Surgery might be necessary to remove these cysts if they are causing symptoms.
Trauma: In cases of severe liver injury due to trauma, surgery might be needed to repair the damaged liver tissue and stop any bleeding.
Portal Hypertension: Surgery can also be used to manage complications arising from portal hypertension, a condition where there’s increased pressure in the portal vein that carries blood to the liver. Surgical procedures like portosystemic shunts can help alleviate this pressure.
